Melle is an interesting hillside town, around 30 minutes to the north of Villemorin reached on the main road to Poitiers.
The main tourist attractions are the three Romanesque churches, plus the Silver Mines which are the oldest in Europe, operating from the 7th to 10th century.
For a day out, combine a trip to Melle with a visit to the ZooOdysee wildlife park which is located in the forest of Chizé, near 79360 Villiers en Bois.
Alternatively, only 9 minutes away in the direction of Niort, you will discover the interesting Abbeye Royale at Celles-sur-Belle. From mid June to mid September this abbey is open every day (closed 12:30 to 2:30), and out of peak season is open several days a week from April to October.
