Nearby bars and restaurants

There are a number of bars and restaurants in the vicinity

There are a number of bars and restaurants in the vicinity: these are our recommendations, but please do tell us of your discoveries and experiences, so we can update our website:

Aulnay

There are four restaurants and a bar - two restaurants and a bar are on the square, and the other two restaurants are a little harder to find!

Chez Lillianna - Actually, it's not that hard to find - from the town, head towards the Tourism Office then turn right in a Poitiers direction.  Head around 200 metres up the hill and you will find it on the right!  This restaurant only opened in January 2023, and seems to be open all day offering a mix of pizzas, salads, crepes, burgers etc plus breakfast offerings.

On the main square itself, there are

le Neuf (number 9)- This bar and restaurant is located right on the square (at number 9 place Aristide Briand, surprisingly enough), and a very pleasant place to spend time with a drink watching the world go by.   For less clement times, there is an indoor dining area and a courtyard at the rear.  Restaurant bookings can be made online.

La Concorde, to the right as you enter the square, is a little bar that is always busy.  If, after a drink there you feel like a stroll, go down the little lane to the side of the bar, cross the road and turn right, and you will find the old communal washing room and a hidden garden by the side of the river.

Finally, there is the Relais d'Aulnay, bar and restaurant.  Heading into Aulnay from the cottages, turn left when you drop down into place Aristide Briand, and keep going.  As you leave the built up area the road forks - keep left towards Cognac and just as the road bends to the left, the Relais will be found on the right.  Reservations can be made by telephone, but rest assured the owners are British and staff speak both French and English.

Dampierre sur Boutonne

Le Garage à Papi is a great little bar to be found opposite the Chateau, with a reasonable selection of food.  Casual seating is available in its gardens which wend down to the river Boutonne

Matha

There is a lovely little restaurant and bar hidden away on a side street.  Les Fleurs du Malt can be found on rue de l'hôtel de ville.   Coming from our cottages, when you get to the crossroads at the centre of the town you should see a pizzeria called Le Triskel (no connection!) opposite - go past this on the left hand side down the hill then take the first turning to the right.

Les Fleurs du M have a great selection of beers both to drink onsite or to take-away; most days it also has a good choice of meals

St Jean d'Angely

There are a host of bars and restaurants in St Jean covering all tastes, but le Scorlion is consistently top of the list.  It is one of the most renowned restaurants in the area, and never fails to impress.  Its address 5, Rue de l'abbaye, near to the tourist office.  There is parking available near the ruined abbey, and le Scorlion is just to the north.  It's own website is available here

Néré - Le Bistro de St Pierre - Previously a guest favorite, unfortunately the owner has retired and the bistro is currently closed.
