Aulnay is the nearest village to Villemorin, being around 3.5 miles away to the west.
The Church of St. Peter, which you will find near the tourist office, is one of the finest examples of Romanesque churches in western France and is classed as a French National Monument. It is on the route for pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela.
Aulnay has a number of bars and restaurants, a couple of boulangeries, a pharmacy, a hairdresser, a post office and two banks.
There is a lovely market held in the centre of the village on Sunday mornings with a brilliant variety of fresh local produce. There are also tennis courts and a seasonal open-air pool.
On the outskirts of the town is a very good Intermarché - descend into the village square, take the road to the right and follow the directions towards Poitiers (taking a right turn then a left). As you exit the village you should pass a Renault garage on your right; take the second turning to the left and you will find the supermarket at the end of the road. This is open from 9am until 7pm six days a week.
Incidentally, if you are looking on SatNav or a mapping application, the full name of the village is Aulnay de Saintonge (postal code 17470) - there are several other villages in France with Aulnay in their names!
